5 tips for a special Valentine's Day

This weekend the world celebrates love. We all have plans to shower our favorite people with all the attention they deserve, but do not necessarily get. How about our favorite animals ?

Here are five tips to make this Valentine's Day special for our four-legged friends also.

1. Get a AWBI Colony Animal Care Taker ID
We all have faced harassment from the local people when we take care of the community dogs, cows and even,as in my case, a mule. This is the ID that says that Animal Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Environment and Forests has authorized you to take care of the animals in your area. The process of getting the ID is surprisingly easy. Go to the link given below and follow the instructions. Within one-two months, your ID should arrive!

2. Set up water bowls for the animals.
The Weather Department has forecast a particularly harsh summer this year. Get ready to take care of your animals friends by setting up water bowls for them. You can use the cement containers for potted plants, they are cheap at 80/- per piece and are easily available.

3. Feed the birds
A simple meal of bajra and broken rice goes a long way to keep our feathered friends happy. I usually have a two bowls of this out- one in the garden and one in the balcony. According to Feng Shui, the house where the birds chirrup is the house of prosperity, so bring in Goddess Laxmi also with this simple measure!

4. Volunteer with an animal welfare organization.
The NGOs working with both domestic and wild animals do a phenomenal job. Show your appreciation by getting involved, even if it is one hour a week. Here is a list of NGOs working with domestic animals in Nagpur (in alphabetical order)

         i. Indian Society for Animal Welfare (iSAW)
ii. Nagpur Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA)
        iii. People for Animals (PFA)

5. Neuter your pets and community dogs and cats.
The shelters run by Nagpur SPCA and PFA are full of puppies, indie dogs and abandoned breed dogs. Neutering your pet and community dogs makes sure that unwanted breeding is avoided and the animals in the shelter have a chance to get homes in loving families. It also improves the health of your animals. Get in touch with your vet or Teaching Veterinary College Clinic, near Alankar Talkies for more information.

Lets make more lives feel loved!
