Nagpur SPCA wishes animal lovers a very happy and safe new year

This new year make a resolution to be kind to animals. Start with visiting and volunteering at Nagpur SPCA- an organization which can show you how.Even if it is for one hour a week, it is good enough for the animals housed in the shelter.

Nagpur SPCA is located on Katol Road. The postal address says it is near Gittikhadan Square, Deepak Nagar but here it how to get there. If you are coming from Seminary Hills side, take a left towards Police Line Takli and continue on that road. You are now on Katol Road. You will pass Ramdeobaba Engg College on your left. You will soon reach the Gittikhadan Square. After you have crossed the signal, on your left, you will see a small HP petrol pump. Continue straight for roughly 25-35 metres. You will see a big ground.There is a small settlement there and an auto stand. There is a kuccha road going inside the ground. Get on that kuccha road and near the end of the ground on your right hand side, you will see a big blue gate and small white buildings. The blue gate has Nagpur SPCA written on it.

Nagpur SPCA runs an OPD from 11am till 3pm daily,except on sundays. There is also a well equipped animal hospital. There are two doctors and two full time 24-hour assistants living on campus.The best part of Nagpur SPCA is the boarding facility. There are 5 neat and tidy boarding kennels. The kennels are very spacious with a big room and a small yard for the dog to play in. Between each room is a small window for the dog to gossip with the neighbours, if so inclined. The kennels are cleaned daily and the dog is fed as per the parents instructions.The dog is also taken for a walk in the 1 acre campus.And now with the fully operational pet grooming parlour, Nagpur SPCA is setting the standards for dog care in Central India.

A lot of people I interacted with in Nagpur were not aware of SPCA and that it exists in Nagpur. Nagpur SPCA stands for Nagpur Society for Prevention of Cruelty against Animals and is affiliated to RSPCA, UK. It has been around since 1971. Till 1984, it was what the present Executive President, Dr. Kailash Marwah calls, a drawing-room society. Neuter your pets and community dogs

I never understand why people dont neuter their dogs and cats. Most people are not interested in getting their pets mated, so taking chances with unwanted pregnancies and it's complications is something I never tire of telling my clients. So when Worldwide Veterinary Services came to Nagpur for their surgical camp for training vets in spay-castration techniques, I jumped at the chance and joined. The two week long course was very intensive with theory lectures on welfare, understanding the drugs we use, the aseptic techniques for neutering operations and assessing the post-op dogs on the Glasgow Pain scale. I and my partner, Dr. Neeti each operated on two females and two males daily, taking turns with the anesthesia. Wildlife Tranquilization and Gun Maintenance

I had a wonderful experience in Gorewada Forest getting trained in techniques of wildlife tranquilization and gun maintenance. The two day, 16 hour training was conducted by the Nawab Shafat Ali of Hyderabad and his team with Dr. Naveen Kumar as the veterinary expert. Alongwith around 20 other Range Forest Officers of jungles around Nagpur, I learned about the various drugs used to tranquilize the animals, how to prepare the dart and load the gun. After that, we spent time practising using the guns and aiming for the targets. It was a novel experience for me because I dont really remember playing with even a plastic toy gun. The gun made of metal and wood took quite some time getting used to, but I did manage to fire quite close to the target. The Dan-inject gun was lighter and much easier to handle.
